Tips on Decorating A Small Space...

I live in a studio apartment that is approximately 650 sq ft though at times it feels somewhat smaller. This has not always made for easy living but here a some tips on how to decorate your small space to make it an effective living space without sacrificing style.

When you don’t have a lot of space it’s a good idea not to waste the space. Try to utilize the space to the best of your ability. For example, try and decorate using versatile furniture. Instead of a coffee table use an ottoman and place trays on top. That way you still have space to prop up your feet and the trays can easily be removed if needed. I would also suggest using furniture pieces that offer storage as well as the décor aspect.

Multiple rooms in one. If you’re in a studio like me it’s not uncommon to have your home office as part of your living room. This can be done in a way that is user friendly without having to lose style points.

Mirrors are a great way to open up a small space and make it appear larger.

Declutter. Too much stuff can often cause one to feel closed in and not comfortable in your space. A nice clean space always makes you feel a sense of ahhh and not a sense of frustration from all the stuff. I actually took a full two days last month and decluttered my entire apartment. Cleaned out the excessive magazine collection, the extra stuff just hanging out on top of my refrigerator collecting dust. The feel of less stuff has made such a difference in my life. I used to go home and look around at all the stuff and it drove me absolutely crazy. Now I have a sense of peace and serenity when I’m home. The home should be a place to go to and have good feelings, not feelings of anxiety because of all the extra crap so to say.

To go along with the decluttering of the space is just simply to keep it organized. An organized space just feels better and makes you feel better.

Using Lucite tables or chairs can create the illusion of glass making the space in which it exist appear larger.

The use of lights and lighting. Use several lamps throughout the space to lighten up the area and brighten the space.

Floating shelves add additional storage for a small space but also give a sleek and contemporary look to the space.

I’m also a fan of using bright colors. It might not exactly make the space appear larger but darn it it looks good!

I also suggest painting one wall or wallpapering one wall. Trust me, wallpaper in 2010 in not the wallpaper you think of circa 1982. It brightens up any space and it a nice update to your home. I think I’ll take my own advice and have project "redo Wags apartment" this weekend. It’s a easy and inexpensive way update to your space.

These are just a few tips to think about when it comes to decorating a small space. For all your home buying, selling, or leasing need…or if you want a little decorating advice feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call
