Dallas' 10 Commandments
I came across an article by Steve Blow of the Dallas Morning News today. He spoke briefly about how the mayor of Mexico city came up with 10 commandments for all citizens to live by to improve themselves and their city. Many if not all their commandments probably do not pertain to Dallas but Mr.Blow came up with his own for the Big D. Voice your opinion and feel free to add more. Enjoy!
1. Don't gawk. Traffic is the worst part of life here. And worst of all are those totally unnecessary "onlooker backups."
Don't slow down just to eyeball every little mishap and breakdown on the freeway. Make it a test of your will. Eyes forward. Maintain speed. No peeking!
2. Say no to panhandlers. Sure, you may feel saintly for a moment. But your spare dollar isn't helping. You're making things worse, in fact, for the person and the city.
Give generously instead to a program providing real help. The Stewpot. Interfaith Housing. Family Gateway.
3. Go in. Air pollution is our worst environmental problem. Idling cars in long drive-through lines are such a needless addition to the foul goop.
If there is more than a car or two ahead of you in line, park and go in. Save time and air.
4. Buy local. Who wants to live in a city with the same boring chain stores and restaurants as every other city?
Get out of the rut. Patronize local merchants and restaurants. Reward individuality.
5. Take a stroll. Get up, turn off the TV and go for a leisurely walk around the block.
Your neighborhood will be healthier and so will you. Crime will drop. Your mood will rise.
6. Attend a live performance. Of something. Anything. It doesn't matter.
A community concert in the park. A big production in the arts district. A bar band. A poetry slam.
7. Go downtown. A city needs a center. Help restart Dallas' heart.
Buy tomatoes or begonias at the Farmers Market. Take the kids to the Dallas World Aquarium. Chill at the serene Crow Collection of Asian Art. (It's free.) Eat in Uptown or in Deep Ellum.
8. Phone friendly. Don't be a dangerous or obnoxious cellphone user.
Don't talk when driving needs all your attention. Don't text or e-mail while driving, period. Don't carry on loud conversations in public places. Turn it off in theaters.
9. Read the newspaper. Yes, this is shamelessly self-serving. But it's also true: Nothing connects you to a community like reading the local newspaper.
Get interested. Get involved. Find a new place to go.
10. Lighten up. Loosen up. Live and let live.
Life isn't a contest to be won, but a journey to be enjoyed. Sometimes that's easy to forget on the Dallas portion of the journey.
The first commandment I would add is when looking to Rent, Buy, or Sell Real Estate in Dallas, give Rogers Healy and Associates a call. Feel free to email me at Josh@RogersHealy.com for all your Real Estate needs.
